I use a variety of hook sizes when making amigurumi. My most used hook size is 4.0 mm, but I also use other sizes depending on the project. If you only buy one hook, I recommend a 4.0 mm hook, but of course it’s great to have hooks in various sizes. I love the brand Clover Soft Touch. They’re easy to hold and I can crochet for hours without my hand getting tired. Below are the exact hooks I use.
Here is the set of hooks I use for Tunisian crochet. I have two sets of these hooks because each set comes with one hook in each size, but to do Tunisian crochet in the round you need two hooks in the same size attached to the same cord (or a special double ended hook). It’s a little pricy, but I love this hook set. It comes with several sizes up to 8mm. The hooks are interchangeable and screw onto a cord so they can be used as regular crochet hooks or as Tunisian crochet hooks.
The yarn I use will depend on the project, but for most of my amigurumi I use Caron Simply Soft. I buy it from a lot of different stores, it just depends on where there is a sale. You can find it at Michaels, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Herrschners and Walmart. It is also available on Amazon, but they don’t have the best prices. You can typically find this yarn for $2 – $4.
I use 18 mm safety eyes for most of my projects, but occasionally I use a smaller size. Below you can find the exact eyes I use. The reviews are mixed, but I’m pretty happy with them and have not yet received a bad batch.
I like to use needle felting in a lot of my amigurumi. It makes the finished piece look more like the original character. Below are the materials needed for needle felting.
