Gastly Crochet Pattern With Video Tutorial

This year I thought I’d try my hand at a holiday themed tutorial.  Since most of you seem to like Pokemon a lot, I thought now would be a great time to make one of the ghost type Pokemon, Gastly.  It’s really quick and easy to make, probably the easiest tutorial I’ve ever made!  I hope you enjoy this festive Halloween pattern!

Visit the Materials page to see the exact materials I use to create my patterns!

  • Medium – 4 worsted weight yarn in black.  I use the brand Caron Simply Soft
  • Crochet hook compatible with your yarn. I used a 4.00 mm hook
  • 1 pair of 18 mm safety eyes
  • One sheet of extra thick felt in white
  • Sewing needle large enough to fit your yarn
  • Toy stuffing
  • Needle felting supplies:
    • Felting wool in purple.  I used three shades of purple.
    • Felting needle
    • Felting pad

CH: Chain

SC: Single Crochet

ST: Stitch

INC: Increase (Single Crochet 2 in 1 stitch)

INV DEC: Invisible decrease

SLST: Slip stitch

FO: Finish off

FL SC: Front loop single crochet

How to read the pattern:

(pattern) x # (##): repeat the pattern in the parentheses # times, when you have repeated the pattern the specified number of times you should have ## stitches.

Example: (SC 3, INC) x 3 (15) means single crochet three stitches then increase in the next stitch. Repeat the pattern three times. When you are finished you should have 15 stitches in the round.

Using your extra thick, white felt, cut out a large circle about 2-3 inches in diameter.  I used a water bottle to measure mine.  Cut the circle in half and poke your safety eyes through (one eye for each half), don’t attach the backs yet!  Don’t put the eyes directly in the center, instead put them slightly towards the inside so they look like they’re looking forward (as opposed to off in different directions).  Refer to the video for more details.

Position the eyes through the crocheted portion, layered felt then crochet.  When you are satisfied with the position, attach the backs.  Once the backs are on it’s really difficult to get them off so be absolutely sure you like the placement.

Stuff the head / body and sew bottom closed by sewing through the front loop of every remaining stitch until closed.

Using your loose felting wool and your felting supplies, attach the smokey aura around the center, framing the face.  This is similar to how you would do it if you were making the sun.  You can also fill in the back, but I didn’t have enough felt to fill in mine.  Refer to the video for more details.

And that’s it!  A really quick and easy Halloween project for the Pokemon lover in your life!  Please leave a comment down below with any questions or just let me know how it went for you!
